Backlit

Terms of use

Last updated 29 August 2026

These are the terms for using Backlit. They are meant to be read once, in a few minutes, and understood.

Who this is between

Backlit is made and run by Colin Hwang. Using the app means you accept what is on this page. If you do not, do not use it, and if you already have, delete your account from Settings.

Backlit is downloaded through the App Store, so Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to the copy on your device. Where that agreement and this page cover the same ground, that agreement wins.

Your account

You need an account, and it is yours to look after. Keep the password to yourself, and use an email address you can actually receive mail at, because it is the only way back in.

You have to be old enough to agree to a contract where you live, and at least 13 either way.

You can delete your account at any time, from inside the app, and it is immediate. See the privacy policy for exactly what that removes.

Backlit Plus

There is no lifetime purchase, and there are no ads.

What you put in

Your library, your reviews, your lists and anything you upload stay yours. Nothing here transfers ownership of them.

What you do give is the permission needed to run the service: to store what you save, to show it back to you on your other devices, and to show anything you deliberately made public to the people you made it public to. That permission ends when you delete the thing, or your account.

You are responsible for having the right to upload what you upload.

What not to do

An account doing any of this can be suspended or removed. If yours is, you will be told why, and backing up your library stays available to you.

Where the catalog comes from

Game titles, covers, release dates and the rest are IGDB's, used under IGDB's terms, and remain theirs. Backlit shows them and does not sell them.

Connecting Steam reads your public Steam library through Valve's own API. Valve's terms apply to that, Backlit is not affiliated with Valve, and the connection can be undone in the app.

Every game name and trademark belongs to whoever owns it. Backlit is not endorsed by any of them.

Your data, and the file in your hands

Back up your library, in Settings, is always there, always free, and writes a complete file of your library that you keep. That is the promise this whole product is built around: nothing Backlit does should be able to lose your library, and the backup exists so that even the end of the service could not.

What is stored, and what deletion removes, is on the privacy policy page.

What is not promised

Backlit is provided as it is. It is a real product looked after by a real person, and the intention is that it works, but there is no promise that it is uninterrupted, error free, or right about every game in a catalog of hundreds of thousands. Match quality, playtime estimates and achievement counts come from outside sources and are as good as those sources are.

To the fullest extent the law where you live allows, Backlit is not liable for indirect or consequential loss, and total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid in the twelve months before it. Nothing here limits anything that cannot legally be limited, and if you have consumer rights that this paragraph would cut across, you keep them.

Ending it

You can stop at any time by deleting your account. Backlit can end an account that breaks the rules above, or wind the service down entirely, and in either case you will be told and given time to take your backup.

Changes to these terms

This page can change. The date at the top says when it last did, and a change that affects what you pay or what you may do will be said in the app before it takes effect.
