Terms of use
These are the terms for using Backlit. They are meant to be read once, in a few minutes, and understood.
1. What Backlit is
These terms are an agreement between you and Colin Hwang for the Backlit service. Backlit helps you save, organize, complete, rate and share games you mean to play. It keeps a full local copy of your library and a server copy that can reach your other devices. Creating an account or using Backlit means you accept these terms.
Backlit is downloaded through the App Store, so Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies to the copy on your device. Where that agreement and this page cover the same ground, that agreement wins.
2. Who may use it
You must be at least 13 years old, or the minimum age required to agree to an online service where you live, whichever is higher. If you use Backlit for an organization, you confirm that you have authority to accept these terms for it.
3. Your account
You need an account, and it is yours to look after. Keep access to your sign-in method secure and give accurate account information. Do not use another person's account or create one to evade a suspension.
You can delete your account at any time, from inside the app, and deletion is immediate and cannot be undone. Export your library first if you want to keep a copy. See the privacy policy for exactly what deletion removes.
4. Your content
Your reviews, lists, profile text, uploaded images, grids and other content you create stay yours. You give Backlit limited permission to host, copy, process and display that content only as needed to run the service. Version 1.0 offers no public-profile, public-review or list-sharing control; exporting a grid makes a file for you rather than publishing it through Backlit. The permission ends when the content is deleted, except for copies that must be kept for safety, a dispute or a legal requirement.
You must have the right to use anything you upload. Do not post anything unlawful, threatening, hateful, harassing, sexually exploitative, deceptive, rights-infringing, or exposing somebody else's private information.
Backlit may remove content, limit features or suspend an account when reasonably necessary to enforce these terms, protect people using the service or comply with law.
5. Catalog information
Game titles, artwork, release information and other catalog facts come from IGDB and its licensors. They own their data and apply their own terms.
Backlit is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by IGDB, Twitch or any game publisher. Catalog information may be incomplete, delayed or inaccurate. Every game name and trademark belongs to its owner.
6. Free use and Backlit Plus
Capturing a game, deciding what to play and sharing what you played are available without a paid plan. The free plan has a high library limit intended to prevent automated abuse, not restrict ordinary use. Backlit Plus removes that limit. There is no lifetime purchase and there are no ads.
- Price. Backlit Plus is $2.99 a month or $19.99 a year. The App Store shows the current price in your currency, billing period and included features before you buy, and the price shown there is the one that applies.
- Yearly trial. If the App Store says you are eligible, the yearly plan starts with seven free days. The purchase sheet shows the price that will be charged when the trial ends before you confirm. Cancel before the trial ends to avoid that charge.
- Payment and renewal. Apple charges your Apple ID when you confirm a purchase without a trial, or when an eligible trial ends unless you cancel first. The subscription renews for the same period until you cancel. Turn renewal off at least 24 hours before the period ends to avoid the next renewal.
- Managing it. Apple shows the renewal date and price in your subscription settings. You can manage or cancel there. Backlit cannot cancel it for you, and deleting the app or your Backlit account does not cancel it.
- Price changes. If the renewal price increases, Apple asks for your agreement before the subscription renews at the higher price.
- Restore and refunds. Restore Purchases can restore an eligible purchase associated with your Apple ID. Apple handles billing and refunds. Backlit does not receive your card details.
7. Changes to plans and features
Backlit may add, change or discontinue features as the service develops. It will not take away a paid subscription period you have already purchased. If a material change affects an active subscription, Backlit will provide any notice or remedy required by law or App Store rules.
8. Export, sync, and data
Backlit can export your library to a file you control, without a paid plan. Keep exports that matter to you. Sync and restore are designed to protect your library, but no online service can promise that data loss will never occur.

9. Acceptable use
- Do not bypass access controls or library safeguards, automate abusive traffic, overload the service or scrape it.
- Do not probe for vulnerabilities without permission, impersonate another person or use Backlit to break a law or another service's terms.
- Do not use Backlit to redistribute the game catalog as a catalog, and follow any terms that apply to material supplied by an outside provider.
10. Availability
Backlit is provided as available. There is no promise of uninterrupted or error-free operation, that every game will be present, or that an outside service will remain available. Part of the service may pause for maintenance, security or circumstances outside Backlit's control.
11. Ending use
You may stop using Backlit and delete your account at any time. Backlit may suspend or end access for a serious or repeated breach of these terms, a security risk or a legal requirement. Where appropriate, you will be told why and given a way to get in touch. Export remains available to a suspended account when safety and law permit it.
If Backlit is wound down, notice and time to export your library will be provided when circumstances allow. Terms that naturally continue after use ends, including ownership, disclaimers, liability limits and dispute terms, remain in effect.
12. Disclaimers
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Backlit is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement or uninterrupted operation. Nothing in these terms limits a warranty or consumer right that cannot legally be limited where you live.
13. Limits on liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Backlit is not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive loss, or for lost profits, revenue, data or goodwill arising from Backlit.
Where liability cannot be excluded, total liability is limited to what you paid for Backlit during the 12 months before the event that caused the claim. This limit does not apply where the law forbids it.
14. Changes to these terms
This page can change as Backlit changes. The date at the top identifies the current version. If a material change affects your rights, notice will appear in the app before it takes effect when required. Continuing to use Backlit after the effective date means you accept the updated terms.
